Website for the UAE market: English, Arabic or German?
The language of a website is a sales decision. It should reflect the language in which buyers search, review documents, and discuss a vendor internally.
A German company should choose site languages from the buying process it can document and maintain.
languages
A language version needs its own maintenance and a clear target group.
Short answer
For the UAE market, English can be a practical start if the defined buying team has a proven record of using this language. German can serve its own decision-making route for German companies. Arabic should only appear if the target group and ongoing professional maintenance are assured.
English as a testable initial hypothesis
English can be the first working version if the designated purchasing team has a proven track record of searching, reviewing and communicating in English. To do this, check search results, conversations and document requests. A generally formulated English page without a target group remains just an assumption.
German for the German decision-making phase
German makes sense when a German owner, export manager or sales partner is preparing to enter the market. This page answers other questions: How do I check demand? Which website do I need? How do I get my first interviews? It is not a translation of the English Dubai site.
Arabic only with professional care
Arabic can be important if the specific target group communicates predominantly in Arabic. A one-off translation without local technical review is worse than a well-maintained English page. Only start an Arabic version if someone is permanently responsible for content, queries and updates.
Official language is not automatically buyer language
Arabic is the official language of the UAE. The UAE government also points out that road, traffic and business signage appears in Arabic and English. This indicates the presence of both languages, but not a blanket language preference of a B2B purchasing team. UAE Government: UAE fact sheet ↗
Google recommends separate URLs for different language versions. hreflang can be used to identify real language or regional variants; Each version should refer to itself and the alternatives. Language decision with four pieces of evidence
Choose the first language not based on country, but rather based on the specific purchasing team's verifiable route to work.
| Test question | Possible proof | Episode |
|---|---|---|
| In which language are you searching? | Search Console, SERP research | Language of the home page |
| In which language is the test conducted? | Document requests, interviews | Language of data sheets and FAQ |
| In which language are negotiations taking place? | Sales notes | Contact and offer process |
| Who maintains the version? | Designated responsible person | Only release maintainable languages |
English only as a proven working hypothesis
English can be a useful first version if the defined buying team has a proven track record of searching, reviewing and communicating in English. Without this evidence, it remains an assumption to be tested.
Practical process
- Determine the language based on the person searching and deciding.
- Create separate URLs per language; Don't hide translations behind browser recognition.
- Only publish versions that you can update with product, contact, or offer changes.
Frequently asked questions
Does every page have to exist in all languages?
No. An alternative language version is useful if it can perform and maintain the same task for a different language group.
What does hreflang mean?
Hreflang is a hint to Google about real language or regional variants of a page. Both sides must refer to each other.
